SALSA (Students As Lifestyle Activists) is a unique peer educational program that provides high school students with the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. It is a partnership project between:

  • Rooty Hill High School
  • the Mt Druitt Medical Practitioners’ Association
  • the University of Sydney
  • Western Sydney Local Health District.

The program involves four lessons about food choices, physical activity, healthy lifestyle and individual and community action. These lessons are run during regular PDHPE classes.

The program focuses on the richest resource of our community, students themselves. Our simple premise is that students can motivate each other and learn together about living a healthy lifestyle. The benefits are not limited to the participating students but also extend to the staff, other students at school and to the families of students.

SALSA Youth Voices

SALSA Youth Voices has been running since 2016. There are 2 components to Youth Voices. The first part is attendance at a leadership day. The second part is presenting School Action Plans at an Action Day.

SALSA Youth Voices Leadership Day

The aim of the SALSA Youth Voices Leadership Workshop is to build leadership and advocacy skills of SALSA Peer Leaders (Year 9/10 students) to empower them to design a health promoting action that addresses healthy eating or increased physical activity in their school community. This program is a co-curricular opportunity for students studying PDHPE.

SALSA Youth Voices Action Day

The aim of the SALSA Youth Voices Action Day is to provide a platform for students to showcase their School Action Plan that they designed, prepared and have either implemented or planned to implement in the near future.
